History
Anne Carswell Hamilton was born on 22 November 1923 in Pollokshields, Glasgow. She was educated at Hutchesons' Girls School in Glasgow. After leaving school, she attended the Glasgow and West of Scotland College of Domestic Science (Incorporated) from September 1942 to June 1945. She studied dressmaking, needlework, millinery, embroidery, upholstery and book-keeping. Anne Hamilton was awarded a Group II Diploma, which was presented by HRH Princess Elizabeth in July 1945.
On the eve of D Day, June 1944, the Major of 128th Highland Field Regiment of the Royal Artillery mentioned to his mother, a Governor of the College, that his men would be forced to go overseas without a Battery flag. The girls of the Dough School, as the College was affectionately known, volunteered to make them a new flag and Anne Hamilton, along with another student, Kathleen Goodall, and member of staff, Betty Morton, worked on the Battery's silken insignia. In recognition of their work, the Battery upon their return from their overseas campaign presented the flag to the girls and the College and it was hung in the College hall. Anne Hamilton took up a teaching post at the College in September of that year and was at the presentation. The Battery Flag is preserved with the Records of the Queen's College, Glasgow.
Anne Hamilton married William Morton Wallace in Glasgow in 1951. Latterly she lived on the Island of Arran, where she died in 2003.
